Baking and jewelry-making

Friday, May 2, 2014

Western visitors are sometimes surprised by the stonewashed jeans, mullets and excessive camo (old U.S. military camouflage) walking around Prague. At times it seems like a "Come on, Eileen" video. I say wear what you like, but, yes, BW and I have gawked a little at the guy on the metro in a black leather fringed jacket/pants combo and denim do-rag. Or the gal at the dog food store in a spandex dress stretched so tight it's transparent.

But what do I know? I grew up wearing Zubaz and things that I puff-painted.

To battle this foul fashion, design boutiques, vintage pop-ups and even a locally-designed fashion market have been appearing around Prague. And we're lucky to know a lovely gal, BB, who sells jewelry at some of them. She made this fetching set for me:

Oui!

The artist!

Her site, BB Design, is HERE, on a sort of Czech Etsy.

But the talent doesn't stop there; she also brought this stellar box of homemade koláčky over for dinner the other night. Plum, apple and cheese variations, to die for.

Plus there were carrot cupcakes underneath

In the mean time, I'm still trying to decipher baking ingredients like the one below.

"Corn starch"
Thanks, BB! :)

  1. Hi Emily - You're quite right, you do see some retro fashion around Prague. However, I do like the personalised jewellery that has been made for you.

With regard to discovering the ingredients contained in items on sale in Czech supermarkets, what really frustrates my German wife is that many products on sale here, are imported from Germany, but the German text is usually obliterated by a sticker, giving details of the ingredients in Czech :-(

    1. I noticed that, too! We've also found stickers on products with English labels/instructions. Sometimes recipes come out beautifully and other times I get a really flat cake :)
